Charon is the god who ferries the souls of the newly departed over the Acheron and Styx rivers in the Underworld. The dead have to pay him a coin in order to get into his boat. If a dead person whas not honoured with a proper burrial and does not have a coin to pay their way then they must wander along the banks of the Styx until Charon takes pity on them. It was common practice among the ancient Greeks to place a coin in the mouth of a dead person before they were burried to ensure they could pay Charon's fare. Charon is the son of Erebus and Nyx.
