Melpomene is one of the nine Muses, the daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne. Mt. Parnassus is sacred to them. Melpomene is the muse of tragedy. Her name means "to sing". Melpomene is often seen holding a sceptre or dagger dripping with blood, wearing a tragedy mask, and wearing buskin boots (tall leather boots with thick soles worn in ancient times by tragic actors).
