  • Triangle
  • Lummi Sticks
  • Cabassa
  • Step bells & Mallet
  • Woodblock & Mallet
  • Tambourine*
  • Guiro & Beater / Ratchet
  • Sand blocks
  • Cymbals
  • 2 Glockenspiels & Mallets
  • Drum
  • Grooved Lummi Sticks
  • Stirring Drum* & Mallet
  • Rain stick (optional)
  • Instrument Cue Cards
    * Up to 3 of each can be used

    1. Read Through the Book
    a. Get them familiar with the story

    2. Hand Out Instruments
    a. Ask what happened first…second…third…etc
    b. Explain that if instruments are being played while the story is being explained they can be given to another student

    i. Hand out instruments as they come in the story:
    1. Triangle = Flashlight
    2. Lomi Sticks = Walking stick
    3. Cabassa = Rope
    4. Step bells & Mallet = Twisty Old Stair
    5. Woodblock & Mallet = Alligator eating the bridge
    6. Tambourine = “The Shivers”
    7. Guiro & Beater / Ratchet = Key
    8. Sand blocks = Moving Wall
    9. Cymbals = Axe cutting the stick
    10. Snore = Great Sleeping Bear
    11. Growl = Great Sleeping Bear wakes up
    12. 1 Glockenspiel & Mallet = ladder
    13. Drum = floor
    14. 1 Glockenspiel & Mallet = slide
    15. Stirring Drum & Mallet = Running
    16. Rain stick = Tree
    17. “ooooh” = “spooky” (all students)

    3. Read the Story and Play the Instruments
    a. Give students cues at first by emphasizing the word they are supposed to play on/after

    4. If Time, Switch Instruments and Read the Story Again
