Cheiron, the Wise Centaur

Cheiron was the son of Cronus and Philyra, an Oceanid. Like the other centaurs he was half man and half horse, but unlike them he was very wise and civilized, and his knowledge included medicine, music, martial arts, hunting, and ethics. He was very kind, and loved human beings. Among those he raised/tutored were Jason, Achilles, Heracles, and even the god Apollo. He was accidentally killed when Heracles shot him with an arrow. Being immortal, he would not have normally died from the wound (the arrow had been dipped in Hydra blood), but he was in so much pain that he granted Prometheus his immortality and died.
